For only the second time in Latin American Poker Tour (LAPT) history, a Latino poker player has won an LAPT event, a series of poker tourneys that had been thus far dominated by poker players from Europe.
It also was the first time a Team PokerStars Pro won. Jose ‘Nacho’ Barbero of Argentina beat out a field of 306 players to claim the first prize cash of $279,330.
The final table was truly a gathering of Latino players and was comprised of a local from Uruguay, 1 Colombian, 2 Brazilian players, 3 from Argentina, and the only odd man out was a PokerStars qualifier from France who managed to finish in second place.
The 2010 LAPT Punta del Este event was a rousing success by anyone’s measure, offering a prize pool of US $1,042,260, with forty-eight players making it into the money.
A record crowd of spectators crowded into the ballroom of the Mantra Casino, Uruguay’s leading luxury seaside resort to rail on favorite Barbero, who plays on PokerStars using the screen ‘nachobarbero’.
LAPT Main Event Final Results:
Jose “Nacho” Barbero $279,330 Argentina
Nicolas Cardyn $161,550 France
Andres Korn $99,020 Argentina
Norbert Ludger $72,960 Uruguay
Daniela Zapiello $52,110 Brazil
Marco Caicedo $41,690 Colombia
Bernardo “Bedias” Dias $31,270 Brazil
Roman Suarez $20,850 Argentina
The next LAPT event is scheduled to take place from Mar. 19th thru 23rd in Vina del Mar, Chile, but given the recent devastating earthquake that has wreaked havoc in that country it will surely be rescheduled.
