Online Poker Players Raise $1.5 Million for Haiti

Joining the worldwide concern and support for victims of the tragic earthquake in Haiti, the online poker community has raised over $1.5 million to support people affected by this tragedy. Led by Full Tilt Poker, PokerStars, Cake Poker and others, the Poker Players Alliance proudly announced the generosity of online players.

The PPA revealed that approximately 50,000 online poker players contributed a total of over $760,000. With online poker sites matching the funds, the total amount generated has exceeded $1.5 million.

Full Tilt Poker has been the largest contributor to this impressive total, receiving nearly $300,000 on almost 23,000 donations, and then matching the total for an amazing $586,423. This figure represents over one-third of the funds raised. These funds have been raised through no-play tournaments and balance transfers to a special account set up for the Haitian relief.

PokerStars has also been aggressively raising funds for the relief effort, offering no-play tournaments, a “Haiti Fund” account for donations and a commitment to match donations dollar for dollar. The world’s largest poker room will continue to accept donations until midday on January 31st and then announce their total. Cake Poker also has been extremely active in the effort and will accept donations until midnight on January 31st.

Other sites such as Absolute Poker, Doyle’s Room, Red Kings and UB all held tournaments last week to raise money for the cause. Both UB and Absolute Poker are allowing players to donate player points at their respective stores, and the CEREUS Network had over 700 players play in a $5 rebuy to raise funds.

Online poker players have once again shown their concern for others with the strong outpouring of generosity for the victims in Haiti. Their kindness will be remembered by many people for a long, long time.
