As the cool fall season brings its traditional upswing in online poker action, the race for poker’s Online Player of the Year (OPOY) honors is starting to heat up. There has been a frenzy as of late, with several players helping to jumble the OPOY standings heading into a crucial month of September.
With the PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker starting, the contenders are looking toward the event as a springboard for the final three months of the chase. The WCOOP includes 62 events spread out over the majority of September, providing many opportunities for the frontrunners to distinguish themselves from the rest of the pack.
Taylor “ambiguosity” Paur currently sits atop the OPOY standings, but a mere 256 points separate him from 4th place Steve “gboro780” Gross. The current top six in the OPOY rankings are:
Player OPOY Points
- Taylor “ambiguosity” Paur 7,380
- “kirbynator” 7,132
- Casey “bigdogpckt5s” Jarzabek 7,094
- Steve “gboro780” Gross 7,084
- Corey “Comandr_cool” Burbick 6,484
- Raj “BadcardsAA” Vohra 6,482
Over the past week, kirbynator and BadcardsAA have been the big movers. Kirbynator climbed over bigdogpckt5s and gboro780 to claim the second spot in the rankings, while BadcardsAA vaulted four spots from tenth place with a second place finish in the $100,000 Guarantee on Absolute Poker and a sixth place finish in the $1K Monday.
With the WCOOP offering 62 events, the OPOY rankings will undoubtedly see some turmoil over the month of September. The cool autumn weather may be approaching, but the race for the top spot in online poker is just starting to get hot.
