As expected, PokerStars announced the Vina del Mar stop in the Latin American Poker Tour (LAPT) has been cancelled due to the 8.8-magnitude earthquake that rattled Chile on February 27, 2010, with the epicenter being a scant 175 miles south of Viña del Mar.
The PokerStars official statement reads, in part:
The PokerStars.net Latin American Poker Tour (LAPT) regrets to announce that the 2010 LAPT Viña del Mar, Chile poker festival has been cancelled. The festival was scheduled to be held at the Enjoy Viña del Mar Casino and Resort from March 19-23, 2010.
All players who have qualified or bought-in to the event will be fully refunded their buy-ins and any out-of-pocket expenses.
The latest reports out of Chile revolve around the confusion over Chile’s actual death toll as a result of the quake. The day it struck, the death toll was reported to be around 200. A day later, it was 700. By the end of the week it had risen to about 800 dead. The latest official statement reduced that number to 279, due to a large number missing and presumed dead turned up very much alive.
The last event for the Latin American Poker Tour is the LAPT Grand Final to be held in Argentina, at a date that has yet to be announced.
