Seven employees from Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut are teaching some 350 out-of-work residents of Pennsylvania how to bet on a sure thing: a paycheck.
Opening this week, a dealer school being operated by the Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs racetrack, is the first-ever in the state, and the training is provided free.
Those who make it through the training course successfully will be hired by Mohegan Sun and make a wage of $4 per hour to start, though MS President and Chief Executive Officer Bobby Soper said that dealers generally earn between $15 and $25 per hour, depending on how much they take in from tips which are customary augmentations to casino worker’s take-home pay.
The classes run between 6 to 12 weeks, for training to deal cards for table games ranging from the simplest to the most complex. Graduates will be well versed in games such as craps, blackjack, poker, roulette and Spanish 21, but can earn certificates in multiple games.
The legal addition of table games in Pennsylvania is expected ease the strain of unemployment on public resources in the former steel state, by providing jobs and paying for additional services. Equally important to those doing the hiring is that a local hiring preference be enforced whenever possible.
Mohegan Sun plans to add 83 table games, including blackjack, craps, poker and roulette.
Mohegan Sun in Connecticut will also be the next stop on the PokerStars.net North American Poker Tour (NAPT), running March 27th thru April 13th, will feature 38 poker events over 16 days, leading up to the $5,000 buy-in Main Event and a $10,000 buy-in Bounty Shootout event.
