There were a number of expected outcomes from poker pro Phil Laak’s record-breaking endurance challenge; a Guinness world record, funds being raised for Camp Sunshine, and a long sleep afterwards were all on the agenda. What Laak wasn’t expecting was a journey that would change his life.
In advance of his challenge, Laak spent six months preparing. He spent time in England to work with a sleep deprivation expert. He hit the gym, and worked with his nutritionist to perfect his diet so that he was not relying on any substance to achieve his goal. “I assure you no drugs or stimulants either,” said Laak, who lost his best friend to an overdose. Because of that, he opted for an approach that was free of caffeine and all other stimulants, making his record even more impressive.
For Laak, the most amazing part of the feat is what happened afterwards. He did sleep; twelve hours straight, followed by a short time awake and then six more hours of sleep. After he awoke, Laak found a new man living inside of him. He stated, “Since the moment I woke from the challenge and straight through to now, things have been different. My confidence is higher than ever and doesn’t seem to be waning. My general love for mankind, the universe and all things is higher than ever before.”
Laak admitted feeling happier and more in touch with his feelings since the challenge, even talking about crying in public over something that touched him. This new self-awareness led Laak to exclaim, “The newer and more sensitive Phil that I have been living with is, I believe, a better Phil.” I love this guy. I want to hug him.”
Through the endurance challenge, Laak changed a number of things. He smashed the previous record of 72 hours, he added excitement to the World Series of Poker, and he helped to change the lives of those who are supported by Camp Sunshine. Above all of that, this amazing endeavor changed the man himself, a change he feels is for the better.
