Will Poker Ladies See Mike Matusow Naked at WSOP?

June 11, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

In professional poker, 2010 has already been referred to as “the year of the woman” as the ladies have been experiencing great success on the felts. After a boastful declaration by pro player Mike Matusow, it remains to bee seen if this is the year that poker’s female players can silence their critics (especially Matusow) and put forward a strong showing at the World Series of Poker.

While poker is still predominantly a man’s game, the numbers of women playing (and winning) is growing. Last year, 1,060 women played in the $1,000 Ladies No Limit Hold’em Championship and an estimated 600-700 joined the field for the WSOP Main Event. This year, the number of female players and their overall experience level is expected to be even higher.

Mike Matusow recently downplayed the effect of lady players, proclaiming that he would run naked down the Vegas strip if three women won bracelets, an occurrence that happened in 2004. Starting with today’s ladies’ event, here is a partial list of lady players that have a chance to force Matusow on his breezy journey.

Annie Duke
If there is a queen of poker, Duke would wear the crown. She is a strong and dangerous player, having recently won the 2010 Heads Up Championship. The UB.com pro could single-handedly pick up a couple bracelets this year.

Liv Boeree
The “Iron Maiden” is known for both her love of heavy metal music and her recent European Poker Tour San Remo championship. Young and aggressive, Boeree has the ability to impose her will on a tournament and win a bracelet.

Annette Obrestad
While Obrestad is making her first WSOP appearance, players would be wise not to overlook this young Norwegian. She is an analytical player, yet not afraid to get all-in when necessary. The Full Tilt pro will eventually win at the WSOP, and it could be sooner than later.

Evelyn Ng
The Canadian Ng is more of an unknown commodity at the WSOP, yet she is a legitimate contender for a bracelet. With nearly twenty years of playing and tutoring from fellow Canadian Daniel Negreanu, the Bodog pro cannot be overlooked.

Vanessa Rousso
“Lady Maverick” gives PokerStars a very realistic threat to pick up a bracelet at this year’s WSOP. Both smart and fearless, Rousso has already made waves at several of the 2010 events.

While nobody wants to see Mike Matusow naked on the Vegas strip, this is a year that it could happen. “The year of the woman” in poker offers a number of talented beauties that have the smarts and savvy to send the guys to the rail and win bracelets in the process.
