While he may be an old-timer on the professional poker circuit, legendary player Greg Raymer is anything but a fossil. Raymer is known as “Fossilman” for his passion for the ancient artifacts as well as the fact that in the early days of his poker playing career, he would sell fossils to other players for money to play. Anyone who has watched poker on television knows it is also common for him to use a fossil as a card protector.
While many recognize him these days for his google-eyed glasses, Raymer is better known as one of the all-time great players in the game. Although he is a former Patent Attorney, Raymer became a high-stakes poker player in 1999. Starting out as a B&M player in Connecticut, he put online poker on the map with his performance at the 2004 WSOP Main Event.
Earning his seat through a satellite tournament on PokerStars, Raymer went on to secure a place in history by winning the event for his first WSOP bracelet. That $5 million payday and the fact that he was an online player was a huge factor in the success that Internet poker enjoys today.
Raymer continues to star on the professional poker circuit, and he is one of the best liked and most entertaining players in poker today. Although he is a long-term professional player, a champion, a member of Team PokerStars and a legend in the game, Greg “Fossilman” Raymer is anything but a fossil on the poker felt.
